Sanctuary-One is a secret construction hidden in the forest of the Penyagalosa Natural Park, to be used by one person at a time for the purpose of integrating oneself into the natural environment. The work is created primarily from the abundant natural waste materials found in the local vicinity of the site, meaning that the structure is fundamentally at one with the existing environment while simultaneously standing apart from it.
Through a ritual of being guided by the artist, individuals visited the installation and were left there to be alone for a predetermined, suggested period of time. The installation activates one’s ability to be in the forest through the comfort provided by the elevated structure, transparent walls and roof of the installation which psychologically separate the individual from the surrounding nature while allowing them to be ensconced within the environment and a witness to it. The work itself even provides a frame or screen from which to view the projected space in high definition. The platform of Sanctuary-One is the approximate size of a queen-size bed, giving users the option to spend the night in an immersive experience under the canopy of countless stars which can be seen from the site, fenced in by the swaying pine trees and awakened by the morning bird songs. The work is more than furniture but less than architecture, a space within a space. As one activates the constructed space within the natural environment, they can enjoy a number of activities such as, but not limited to, listening to the surroundings or their body, for watching the local environment, for meditating, for reading, for doing nothing or for simply existing.
Sanctuary-One is not buyable, sellable, rentable, there is no WiFi or cellular service, no electricity and it exists with its own chronology apart from our day-to-day perceptions. As one spends time in the space of the installation, they are able to become acutely aware of their own solitude.
