Bridges exist on all sides of time (in the past, present and future) in a singular moment. One crossing a bridge is a different person once they reach the other side; they change in ways which can be measured geographically, chronologically and also physically. Through the materiality as well as the metaphor of bridges we can explore the idea of time passing and thereby the lifespan of all things (humans, plants, animals, civilizations, et cetera).
‘Midponte’ is a suspension rope bridge consisting of three pylons constructed over the ruins of a Roman stone bridge. The center pylon of the work has two benches for sitting. As you traverse from one side to the other, you can choose to stop in the center of the bridge and through metaphor, stop time. Neither here nor there, an individual sitting on the center pylon has the option to abstain from going either forward or backward. ‘Midponte’ is a space for exploring these ideas, a passageway for examining fragility, and a ruin waiting to happen.
