House of Cards is a project that utilizes the active and constantly changing construction site of The Mill at Vicksburg as source of materials and space for the assembly of a series of thirteen temporary installations. The project was executed over thirteen four-hour long sessions, where rooms or areas within the 39019.28m² site would be activated through the assembly, lighting, documentation and disassembly of temporary installations.
Each installation was put together without making any modifications or using any hardware for fastening. In this way, the series of installations is not only ultra-site-specific but also adds a level of difficulty to their assembly whereby physics, balance and geometry are necessitated in order to put their components together into structural architectural bodies. The assembly of each also sought to use all of the materials in an area, then return them back to their original, or a more organized, configuration. As the project happened over a short period of time, during the construction site’s off hours, the assembly of these temporary installations also acted as a kind of performance for the construction workers, whereby they may come in to notice things have slightly moved, been organized or tidied without any explanation. Each of the installations functions as a singularity; an experiment with the existing space, materials and structures coming together in a single point of time and only documented through photography. Additionally, the period of time starting from the assembly of the first until the disassembly of the thirteenth acts as a body of artistic research, during which the advantages and disadvantages of each installation can be compared and contrasted, as well as how the temporary installations could be translated into future semi-permanent installations. |
