Foraging Florida: An Illustrated Field Guide To More Than 100 Wild Edible Plants In The Sunshine State
228 pages
Illustrated field guide
2024
Florida, with its diverse ecosystems ranging from the Everglades to coastal beaches, offers a wealth of opportunities for those seeking to connect with nature. ‘Foraging Florida’ invites readers to explore the Sunshine State's rich biodiversity through its edible plants.

Drawing on years of practical experience and extensive research conducted by Justin Tyler Tate, ‘Foraging Florida’ describes over 100 of Florida's wild edible plants. Each species is showcased with rich and high-resolution illustrations, providing clear identification and detailed information. These are elaborated on with written descriptions of each plant's habitat, edibility, preparation methods, and other uses. Thus ‘Foraging Florida’ encourages a deeper understanding of Florida’s landscape and habitats by enabling users to identify plants encountered during nature walks, boating trips, or simply exploring their own backyards. In creating a deeper relationship with the environment—by learning about the nutritional and medicinal properties of local wild plants, by adding flavor and nourishment one’s diet—users are encouraged to have a greater appreciation of their natural surroundings and the species which occupy them, thus incentivising greater stewardship of the Floridian landscape.

Tate, inspired by a childhood spent surrounded by edible plants yet lacking the knowledge to identify them, created this guide to share their passion and expertise. ‘Foraging Florida’ aims to be an ideal field guide, providing clear, vibrant illustrations and comprehensive text to help readers confidently identify and utilize the edible bounty of the Sunshine State.

Foraging Florida was researched, designed and produced by Justin Tyler Tate between 2021 and 2024.
